High School Roundup: Corona del Mar boys’ basketball wins Artesia Winter Classic

The Corona del Mar High boys’ basketball team earned a 71-67 win over Palos Verdes on Saturday in the Artesia Winter Classic tournament title game at Lakewood Artesia High.

Senior guard Jack Stone scored 34 points for the Sea Kings (4-1), and senior guard Jack McKenna added 20 points. Jonathan Siegel, Matt DeCrona and Efe Gucoglu scored five points each.

CdM hosts the CdM Beach Bash tournament next week.

St. Margaret’s 54, Estancia 46: The Eagles lost in the final of the Los Amigos tournament Saturday night.

Brandon Pearson earned all-tournament team honors for Estancia (8-2).

Newport Harbor 64, Aliso Niguel 54: Levi Darrow and Josh Sandy each scored 15 points for the Sailors in the third-place game of the Godinez Grizzly Invitational on Saturday.

Ryan Miller of Newport Harbor (7-2) made the all-tournament team.

Edison 71, Foothill 48: The Chargers won their final game of the Godinez Grizzly Invitational on Saturday.

Connor Collins was an all-tournament team selection for Edison (4-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Ocean View 34, Newport Harbor 24: The host Seahawks won the third-place game of the Soaring Flight in the Hawk Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Ocean View improved to 4-3, winning three of its four tournament games.

Willa Rath had six points, 11 rebounds and five steals for Newport Harbor (5-3). Chloe Swanson added six points and eight rebounds.

Fountain Valley 48, Lakewood St. Joseph 36: Kat Luu had 18 points for the Barons in Saturday’s game of the Norwalk Tournament.

Madison Suekawa added seven points for Fountain Valley (3-4).

Pacifica 54, Los Amigos 42: The Lobos (6-3) had their six-game winning streak snapped in the Premier Flight championship game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Ocean View High on Saturday.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 66, Brethren Christian 11: Anna Eddy had a team-high 19 points to lead the host Tritons in Saturday’s nonleague game.

Nola Mihaly-Garvin had 17 points, and Charis Wondercheck added 16 points for Pacifica Christian (2-3).

WRESTLING

Cossarek Classic

Fountain Valley placed third with 185.5 points at Westminster High on Saturday.

Sean Solis (113 pounds) and Max Wilner (170) won individual titles for the Barons.

Solis was named the lower-weight MVP of the meet, recording three pins and a technical fall.

Wilner, an Arizona State commit, trailed going into the third period of his championship bout against Servite’s Valor Buck, but he emerged victorious with a 3-2 decision.

Servite won the team title, edging Bellflower St. John Bosco 258.5-241.5.

Huntington Beach came in eighth place with 123.5 points, led by fourth-place showings from Haiden Hernandez (106) and Cade Haakenson (120).

Marina (21st, 43 points), Costa Mesa (24th, 29 points) and Ocean View (36th, eight points) also competed.

Battle by the Bay

Newport Harbor went 2-3 in the Battle by the Bay wrestling tournament at Corona del Mar High on Saturday.

The Sailors recorded wins against Canyon, 37-33, and University, 48-31.

Sophomore 195-pounder Max Hernandez medaled for the Sailors, winning four of his five matches.

Newport Harbor is now 4-3 in dual meets this season.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Marina 6, El Modena 2: Lily Ensley scored three goals for the Vikings in the Saddleback Tournament title match on Saturday at Saddleback High.

Makenna Reynolds, Kaya Morri and Lana Kardos also scored for Marina (5-3).

The Vikings beat Portola 8-4 in the semifinals earlier Saturday. Ensley scored four goals and goalkeeper Emma Marsh made 16 saves.

Laguna Beach 13, Santa Barbara San Marcos 4: Nicole Struss and Emma Lineback each scored three goals for the Breakers in Saturday’s nonleague road match.

Molly Renner scored twice for Laguna Beach (3-0), and Rachael Carver and Emma Singer had four assists each.

Corona del Mar 10, Goleta Dos Pueblos 2: Grace Myers scored four goals for the Sea Kings in Saturday’s nonleague match on the road.

Kira Hoffman scored twice for CdM (2-1), and Maya Avital made eight saves.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 4, Oak Park 1: Isabella Vigeland, Erin Galvin, Mia Ferrentino and Emily Chanawatr each scored for the Sea Kings in the Back Bay Invitational match Saturday at Estancia High.

Gio Broderick made four saves for Corona del Mar (3-0).
