High School Roundup: Laguna Beach’s Logan Brooks is third in Division IV at CIF State cross-country meet

Laguna Beach High senior Logan Brooks finished third in the boys’ Division IV race at the CIF State cross-country championships on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Brooks, who finished seventh last year, earned all-state honors for the second straight year after completing the race in 15 minutes 24.7 seconds. Breakers coach Scott Wittkop said the time is the school record for a 5K course, breaking Matt Neev’s mark from 2009.

“Ever since last week I was bummed out, looking to have a strong comeback,” said Brooks, who finished 15th at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 finals, in a phone interview. “I just came out and had a different perspective today. Last week I was weak, calorie deficient or something. I came back and kept my head up from the beginning of the race. I decided to do it because I wanted to do it, not do it because there was any pressure.”

Brooks and fellow team captain Mateo Bianchi helped Laguna Beach’s boys, the defending state Division IV champions, finish sixth at state this year. Ventura Foothill Technology won the team title and JSerra’s Anthony Grover won his third straight individual title.

Bianchi, a junior, also earned all-state honors, placing 10th in 15:36.8. Other scorers for the Breakers included Tanner Burton (90th, 16:51.3), Mael Metis (100th, 16:56.7) and Chris Drews (101st, 16:57.1).

Ocean View sophomore Diego Gonzalez placed 33rd in the Division IV boys’ race, in 16:11.7.

On the girls’ side, Laguna Beach placed fifth in Division IV. The Breakers were paced by all-state finisher Jessie Rose, a junior who placed eighth in 18:12.2. Other scorers for Laguna Beach included Morgan Falkowski (23rd, 18:44.6), Nina Rogers (36th, 18:57.6), Kaitlin Ryan (100th, 20:16.6) and Sierra Read (101st, 20:19.0).

Costa Mesa’s girls, making their first state meet appearance since 1997, placed ninth in Division IV. They were paced by senior Diane Molina, an all-state performer who was fifth individually in 18:03.2, and junior Jaqueline Rodriguez (53rd, 19:17.0).

Sage Hill’s girls finished 17th in Division V. The Lightning’s top finishers were seniors Kate Miller (47th, 19:55.9) and Hannah Ren (67th, 20:24.5).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 67, Diamond Ranch 50: Ryan Miller scored 18 points for the Sailors on Saturday in the third-place game of the Valley Christian tournament.

Robbie Spooner added 15 points for the Sailors (3-1), and Levi Darrow scored 14 points. Spooner was an all-tournament team selection.

Marina 81, California 53: The Vikings’ Ethan Barnella earned game MVP honors for the Vikings in the Edison After Thanksgiving Showcase game on Saturday at Edison High.

Marina improved to 3-3.

Beckman 74, Corona del Mar 70: Jack Stone scored 36 points for the Sea Kings in Saturday’s Edison After Thanksgiving Showcase game at Edison High.

Jack McKenna added eight points for CdM (0-1).

Ocean View 59, Los Angeles Mendez 46: The Seahawks improved to 2-4 after Saturday’s nonleague home win.
