College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball ends three-game skid with win over Louisiana

Tommy Rutherford scored 20 points on nine-for-10 shooting, helping the UC Irvine men’s basketball team end a three-game losing streak with a 92-67 win over Louisiana on Tuesday in the MGM Resorts Main Event tournament at Clark High in Las Vegas.

Collin Welp contributed 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Anteaters (4-4) on the final day of the tournament. Eyassu Worku had 13 points, while John Edgar Jr. and Brad Greene added 12 points apiece.

UCI hosts Eastern Michigan on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bren Events Center. The Anteaters will retire former standout Scott Brooks’ No. 12 jersey at halftime.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast 3, Long Beach City 2: Joceline Martinez had 17 kills, and the No. 9-seeded Pirates rallied for a 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25, 16-14 road win in Tuesday’s California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regional playoff opener.

Mahina Kenoi had 12 kills and 17 digs for Orange Coast (19-6), which advances to play at No. 1 Irvine Valley (24-0) in the second round on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Grossmont 3, Golden West 0: Sierra Emil had 11 kills for the visiting No. 17-seeded Rustlers (15-9), but the No. 2 Griffins advanced to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regional playoffs with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 sweep at home on Tuesday.

MEN’S SOCCER

El Camino 4, Orange Coast 1: Julian Madrigal scored in the 22nd minute for the No. 5-seeded Pirates (13-4-5) in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regional playoffs on the road Tuesday.
