High School Roundup: Locals advance in CIF Southern Section Individuals girls’ tennis tournament
Huntington Beach High junior singles player Kaytlin Taylor advanced to the round of 32 on Monday in the CIF Southern Section Individuals girls’ tennis tournament at Lakewood Tennis Center.
Taylor received a bye in the first round, and she went on to win her next two matches.
Marina freshman Mika Ikemori did not drop a set across two matches at El Dorado Tennis Club to move on to further action.
Corona del Mar junior Hannah Jervis lost in the second round at El Dorado Tennis Club.
The Sea Kings’ doubles team of sophomore Jane Paulsen and junior Reece Kenerson qualified for the round of 32 by winning two matches.
Edison’s doubles pairing of senior Zoe Coggins and sophomore Kailee You also advanced by winning all three of their matches.
Costa Mesa seniors Leslie Delgado and Hallie Tran lost in the first round of the singles draw.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Edison 72, Compton Centennial 49: Madison Copeland had 15 points and seven steals on Monday, helping the Chargers advance to the Santiago Tournament championship game.
Lainey Johnson had 14 points and five assists, while Taylor Fullbright added 12 points.
Edison (3-1) will play in the final on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against either Chino or Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary.
Newport Harbor 49, Costa Mesa 20: Chloe Swanson had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the visiting Sailors, who improved to 4-0 after Monday’s nonleague game.
Cydney Jover added nine points, six steals and four assists for Newport Harbor. Fiona Lin and Genevieve Perry had eight points each, and Emma Coatsworth and Emma Fults added six points apiece.
Costa Mesa is 1-3.
Huntington Beach 52, Temple City 25: Andie Payne had a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Oilers in a season opener on Monday in the Downey Tournament.
Cassidee Kinslow added 17 points for Huntington Beach.
Pacifica Christian Orange County 56, San Bernardino Public Safety Academy 20: Anna Eddy finished with 23 points for the Tritons, who played without two starters in Monday’s nonleague home game.
Charis Wondercheck had 17 points for Pacifica Christian (1-1).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Pacifica Christian Orange County 68, San Juan Hills 50: Judah Brown had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting Tritons in Monday’s game in the Stallion Showcase.
Houston Mallette contributed 16 points and seven assists for Pacifica Christian (2-1). Josh Sims had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Riyaan Jiwani added 16 points.
Pasadena La Salle 66, Newport Harbor 57: Robbie Spooner led the Sailors with 13 points in their season opener in a pool-play game of the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament on Monday.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Estancia 2, Beckman 2: Felix Soliz-Martinez and Jesus Guerrero scored for the visiting Eagles in Monday’s nonleague match.
Brandon Lopez also made three saves for Estancia (1-1-1).
