College Roundup: Golden West men’s water polo wins fourth straight CCCAA state championship

The Golden West College men’s water polo team is again the state champion.

Konstantinos Koulouris scored five goals as the Rustlers won their fourth straight California Community College Athletic Assn. State championship Saturday, edging Long Beach City 10-9 in the title match at Golden West.

Manuel Augusto had three goals and five assists for Golden West (27-3), including the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Taylor Lungu and Barnabas Vidovics also scored, while former Fountain Valley High standout Jake Huynen made five saves in goal.

The state title was the Rustlers’ 27th in program history.

San Jose State 14, UC Irvine 10 (2OT): Casey Lynton, Jason Evezard and Bryant Joudrie each scored two goals, but the Anteaters dropped the fifth-place game of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament in overtime on Saturday.

Harrison Land made nine saves for UCI (7-13). Grant Chiponis, Jon Polos, Zlatan Nikocevic and Chad Gornay each had one goal.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern Oregon 75, Vanguard 71: Aziz Seck had a team-high 14 points for the Lions in Saturday’s nonconference loss at Hope International in Fullerton.

Isaiah Gentry added 13 points for Vanguard (3-3), and James Moore had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 5, Irvine Valley 1 (2OT): Julian Madrigal and Danny Vargas each had two goals, as the host Pirates rallied to win in extra time on Saturday in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. playoffs.

Former Edison midfielder Chase Bullock had a goal and an assist, and Pablo Ramirez made 11 saves for Orange Coast (13-3-5).

Golden West 2, Chaffey 1: The Rustlers (9-3-9) won at home on Saturday in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. playoffs.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Embry Riddle 1 (Vanguard wins 3-1 on penalty kicks): Myranda Baca, Marielisa Hallam and Alena Wade all made penalty kicks for the Lions in the first round of the NAIA National Championships on Saturday at Vanguard.

Vanguard (14-2-2) got an unassisted first-half goal from Baca in regulation. Haley Magana made five saves.

The Lions advance to play on Dec. 3 against a to-be-determined opponent.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Golden West 3, Mt. San Jacinto 0: The visiting Rustlers earned a 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 straight-sets victory on Saturday in a play-in match for the Southern California regional playoffs.

Golden West (15-8) will play at Grossmont in the first round on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0: Onye Ofoegbu and Joy Umeh each had 10 kills for the Anteaters in the 25-12, 25-23, 25-23 Big West Conference loss Saturday on the road.

UC Irvine ended the season 5-24 overall, 2-14 in conference.
