High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ water polo beats Foothill in CIF SoCal Regional Division I opener

The No. 2-seeded Newport Harbor High boys’ water polo team advanced to the CIF Southern California Regional Division I semifinals with Friday’s 11-8 opening-round win over No. 7 Foothill at Segerstrom High.

The defending champion Sailors (27-4) will play No. 3 Los Angeles Loyola in a semifinal Saturday at 2:50 p.m. at Segerstrom. The final is at 7 p.m.

Huntington Beach 11, La Jolla Bishop’s 7: The No. 5-seeded Oilers upset the No. 4 Knights in Friday’s CIF Southern California Regional Division I opener at Segerstrom High.

Huntington Beach (19-10) plays top-seeded Studio City Harvard Westlake in a semifinal match Saturday at 1:40 p.m. at Segerstrom.

8-MAN FOOTBALL

Ojai Thacher 46, Sage Hill 21: Finn McClintock had two passing touchdowns for the Lightning in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinal playoff game Friday on the road.

Ben Romero had a 50-yard receiving touchdown and an interception on defense for Sage Hill (10-2). Christo Karahalios had a 60-yard rushing touchdown.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Temecula Rancho Christian 83, Pacifica Christian Orange County 77: Houston Mallette had 31 points for the Tritons in the nonleague game Friday at Vanguard University.

Judah Brown added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Pacifica Christian (1-1).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 3, Ocean View 1: Richard Cervantes had two goals for the visiting Eagles in Friday’s nonleague match.

Alessandro Madrigal also had a goal, and Brandon Lopez made three saves for Estancia (1-1).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Edison 54, Cypress 44: Lainey Johnson had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chargers in a Santiago Tournament game on Friday.

Madison Copeland added 11 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor Fullbright contributed 10 points and five steals.

Edison (1-1) plays tournament host Santiago on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
