College Roundup: Vanguard women’s basketball earns first win of season

The No. 10-ranked Vanguard University women’s basketball team beat No. 17 University of Providence 70-63 on Friday in its second game of the Montana Tournament in Great Falls, Mont.

Junior Tristen Rollon led Vanguard (1-1) with 14 points and added six rebounds, while senior Vanessa Murphy had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Sierra Vaglica had 11 points and five assists for the Lions.

Providence is 2-1.

Vanguard won its second straight conference title Friday at Irvine Regional Park in Orange, topping the nine-team field with a score of 38 points.

The Lions had four top-10 individual finishes on the 5K course, including Marissa Thompson, who came in second in 18 minutes 33 seconds. Madison Parr placed fourth in 18:54, while Jennifer Perez-Cazarez (19:15) and Avery Dorff (19:16) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

Vanguard finished fifth as a team Friday at Orange’s Irvine Regional Park, led by Caleb Myers, who finished fourth individually on the 8K course in 26 minutes 14 seconds.

The Master’s University won its 10th straight conference title.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Irvine Valley 3, Orange Coast 0: Mahina Kenoi had 10 kills and 10 digs for the host Pirates, but the Lasers clinched the outright Orange Empire Conference title with Friday’s 25-15, 26-24, 25-18 sweep.

Irvine Valley improved to 20-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play, while second-place Orange Coast is 17-5 and 10-4.

Golden West 3, Saddleback 1: The Rustlers won 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-10 at home Friday, improving to 13-6 overall and 7-6 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 0: Abby Marjama had a team-high eight kills for the host Anteaters in Friday’s Big West Conference match that Long Beach State won 25-15, 25-14, 26-24.

The Anteaters fell to 4-19 overall and 1-10 in the conference.

The Chargers stayed unbeaten at 16-0-2 overall and 10-0-2 in the conference.

Sam Andrade scored in the 66th minute for the Rustlers (6-9-3, 3-7-2).

Saddleback 4, Orange Coast 1: Lynette Romero had a goal for the host Pirates, who dropped to 6-11-3 overall and 3-7-2 in the Orange Empire Conference on Friday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Fullerton 10, Golden West 3: Kylie Stablein had three unassisted goals for the host Rustlers in the Orange Empire Conference tournament on Friday.

Cypress 8, Orange Coast 3: The Pirates fell in the Orange Empire Conference tournament match on Friday at Golden West College.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego City 111, Orange Coast 61: Myles Woods scored 18 points off the bench for the Pirates in their season opener at the San Diego City Tournament on Friday.

Andres Ortega added 12 points for Orange Coast.

MEN’S SOCCER

Golden West 3, Cypress 1: The host Rustlers stayed unbeaten and atop the Orange Empire Conference, improving to 5-0-5 on Friday.
