High School Baseball: DeFrenza league’s MVP, top pitcher
Estancia High senior Marc DeFrenza took both of the top two awards for Orange Coast League baseball this year, as he was named Orange Coast League Most Valuable Player as well as Pitcher of the Year.
DeFrenza was joined on the all-league first-team by Estancia senior Ryan Boselo and junior Victor Trujillo, as well as Costa Mesa seniors Ryan Boulger and Jesse Fox and junior P.J. Maloney.
DeFrenza helped lead the Eagles (17-11, 9-3 in league) to their first league title since 1991. He and Boselo combined on a 1-0 shutout in the clincher over Calvary Chapel on May 13.
For the year, DeFrenza was 9-3 with a 1.85 earned-run average. He struck out 85 in his 75 2/3 innings and opponents hit just .214 against him. He had five complete games — four of those shutouts — as he led Estancia to the playoffs for the first time in 16 years.
Boselo was 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA. He had 50 strikeouts in his 37 1/3 innings and had two saves, as well as a no-hitter. He also hit .267 with one home run and 10 runs batted in.
Trujillo, an outfielder, batted .333 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. He scored 14 runs.
Boulger was a first baseman for the Mustangs, who finished 14-14 and 8-4 (second place) in league. Boulger was a force at the plate, as he had a team-best batting average of .386 along with team-highs of eight home runs and 35 RBIS. This is his second straight first-team selection.
Fox, an outfielder, batted .333 with six home runs and 31 RBIs for Costa Mesa. Maloney, a pitcher and utility player, hit .385 with one home run and 15 RBIs. He also had a team-high 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
Maloney, who made the first team for the second straight year, was also 8-4 on the mound with a 4.28 ERA. He pitched 68 2/3 innings and struck out 35.
Estancia senior first baseman/pitcher Andres Gonzalez, senior outfielder Ryan Cherney, senior catcher Josh Dominguez, sophomore outfielder Alex Trancoso and junior utility player Matt Carlyle were named second-team all-league.
So were Costa Mesa senior infielder/pitcher Brandon Kelly, senior second baseman/pitcher Brian Waldron, junior outfielder Tyler Sheffner and senior catcher Garrett Hirsch.
