Times Community News wins three L.A. Times awards
Three Times Community News (TCN) staff members were recognized for their journalistic excellence Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Times Editorial Awards.
Emily Foxhall, Jeremiah Dobruck and Debbie Zucco each took home awards for work they did for TCN, the division of The Times that publishes the Daily Pilot, the Coastline Pilot, the Huntington Beach Independent and Weekend. The awards recognized work produced in 2014.
Foxhall received the top prize, the Editor’s Award, for an article she wrote on a man who died at Hoag Hospital after ingesting a gray-market drug known as spice. The piece set a Daily Pilot record for Facebook shares, with 117,000. Foxhall is now reporting on Orange County for The Times.
Dobruck received the beat reporting prize for his work covering crime and courts in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Irvine for the Daily Pilot. He did several in-depth pieces in 2014 and covers multiple crimes a week.
Zucco, who is the copy chief at TCN South, won an award in the copy editing category. She was praised for her commitment to accuracy, fact-checking, usage and style.
“It’s an honor to work with such fine journalists,” said John Canalis, editor of TCN South. “Emily is a gifted storyteller, Jeremiah is a diligent beat reporter and Debbie is a skilled copy editor. They certainly deserve this honor.”
The awards were given out by Times Editor Davan Maharaj and Publisher Austin Beutner during a ceremony in the Chandler Auditorium on the fifth floor of The Times in downtown Los Angeles.
Three journalists from TCN North, the community division in Los Angeles County that publishes the Burbank Leader, Glendale News Press and La Canada Valley Sun, were also recognized.
