Around Town: Roadwork closes part of Back Bay Drive

A portion of Back Bay Drive between Shellmaker Road and Eastbluff Drive in Newport Beach is closed to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on weekdays until Feb. 27.

Newport Beach crews will resurface and restripe the road and put in new signs, according to the city.

The portion of the road will be closed again in early March for additional maintenance. The dates have not yet been determined, the city said.

Estancia youth delegation recognized

The Estancia Youth and Government Delegation returned Monday from Sacramento, where it was named the Delegation of Distinction at the 67th Model Legislature and Court Conference, which teaches students about state government.

Members of the delegation are sophomores Julia Paluch, 16, Abigail Flores, 15, Mackenzie Lamber, 15, Jason Cheesemeore, 15, Jeffrey Alai, 15, Jacqueline Chee, 15, and Luke Hume, 15; juniors Victor Godrey, 16, Abigail Dunham, 16, Gabby Pearson, 16, and Christopher DeFrenza, 17; and seniors Yvonne Garcia, 17, Emma Wexler, 17, Jenna Rutledge, 17, Mariam Elmahl, 17, Charlie Griffen, 18, Jonathan Reyes, 17, and Will O’Dell, 17.

Congresswoman to help honor Jewish school

Rep. Mimi Walters (R-Laguna Niguel) will visit Tarbut V’Torah, a Jewish school at 5 Federation Way in Irvine, from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. Friday to present a congressional commendation to honor the school’s No. 1 ranking for academics among Orange County private schools from Niche.com. The same study also ranked Tarbut V’Torah as the top Jewish school in the nation for academics.

The county also has recognized the school for the honors.

UCI law dean to speak at luncheon

Erwin Chemerinsky, UC Irvine law school dean, will speak to the Orange County chapter of the Assn. of Legal Administrators about diversity and inclusion at a leadership luncheon next month.

About 100 people are expected to attend Chemerinksy’s speech from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 18 at the Pacific Club, 4110 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach.

The cost is $55 ($45 for association members and their guests). Reservations are required.
