Corona del Mar Today: Ideas for flower streets are blooming

The Corona del Mar Business Improvement District will host a community outreach workshop this month to gain input on a project that would add flowery street signs and other decorative elements to beautify the village by emphasizing the flowers behind Dahlia, Carnation and the many other flower streets.

A similar meeting was held last summer.

The district board has been discussing beautification plans that would incorporate flowers, inspired by Corona del Mar’s flower streets, since July 2013.

Last February the group considered using thermoplastic materials to create a large marguerite daisy that would be placed over the asphalt in the center of the intersection of East Coast Highway and Marguerite Avenue. The group also considered plans to add a colorful design to the crosswalks and smaller flowers on the sidewalks at all four corners throughout town, perhaps using images of the flowers represented by each flower street.

Last April, community members at a business district board meeting said they considered the plans to be gaudy. At that meeting, the board also discussed installing blue, oval-shaped street signs with small flowers, as well as pots at street corners that could contain flowers to coordinate with the street names. The project cost was estimated at $100,000.

Business district members agreed to meet with the community to gather more input before proceeding. Several community members attended the August meeting and offered suggestions.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in the community room of the Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Drive.
