A man and woman held up a Newport Beach gas station at gunpoint early Tuesday, according to police.

Around midnight, an employee working in the Chevron station at Bristol Street and Irvine Avenue let the pair inside to shop in the station’s convenience mart.

After a certain time at night, the store’s doors have to be manually buzzed open for customers, police said.

After letting in the shoppers, “[the cashier is] going about her business behind the counter; she looks up and one of the suspects is standing right in front of her,” Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

The man showed the cashier what appeared to be a handgun and aggressively demanded cash from the register, Manzella said.

The robbers made off with about $95 from the cash drawer and fled on foot southbound on Irvine Avenue, according to police.

The male suspect was described as black, between 25 and 30 years old, 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, and 150 to 170 pounds. He was reportedly wearing gloves, a gray beanie, gray hoodie with black stripes across chest, black pants and black shoes.

The female was described as black, between 25 and 30 years old, 5-feet-6 to 5-feet-8, and 170 to 190 pounds.

She was reportedly wearing a black hoodie, gray sweat pants and pink shoes.
