Driver dies after weekend crash
A single-car crash on the 73 Freeway in Newport Beach killed an Anaheim man and injured four others, including a 4-year-old boy, authorities said.
The driver, Diego Alvarado, 23, lost control of the car around 3:40 p.m. Sunday while he was northbound, just north of Campus Drive, at about 65 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The car, a 1997 Toyota Corolla, rolled several times before it stopped right-side-up in the No. 5 northbound lane, according to a CHP news release.
Alvarado and his four passengers were transported to nearby hospitals.
The 4-year-old and a 62-year-old woman, both from Anaheim, suffered moderate injuries. A 65-year-old man from Anaheim and an 18-year-old woman from Irvine suffered minor injuries.
Authorities took Alvarado to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the Orange County coroner’s officer.
CHP officials don’t know why Alvarado lost control and are still investigating the cause of the crash.
