Three or four suspects used a baseball bat to smash the windows of a car, injuring one of the two people inside, shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday in Costa Mesa, police said.

The suspects approached a black, four-door Pontiac at the Arco station at Newport Boulevard and Del Mar Avenue and started hitting the car with the bat, Sgt. Zach Hoferitza said.

He said they broke windows on both sides of the car, and sent glass flying at the face of a female passenger, injuring her.

One of the suspects flashed a handgun, according to police.

The male driver accelerated out of the gas station and reported the incident to police at 12:40 a.m, Hoferitza said.

The motive for the attack is unknown, and the attackers have no known gang affiliation, Hoferitza said. He noted the car had out-of-state plates.
