A Costa Mesa couple seriously injured each other during a domestic dispute Friday morning, police said.

A 37-year-old man called police about 2 a.m. to report that his 23-year-old girlfriend stabbed him at their home in the 300 block of Sunrise Circle, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department news release.

Police withheld the couple’s names.

Police responded to the Eastside home, recovered the knife used in the incident and treated the man at the scene before taking him to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. He was treated for a stab wound to the back, police said.

Police said the woman fled the house after the stabbing, though authorities were able to find her after following a trail of blood that led to a nearby residence. She had cuts to her hands and feet, which were caused by broken glass during the fight, officials said.

The girlfriend told police that her boyfriend had choked her and thrown her to the ground.

The boyfriend, who is still in the hospital, has nonlife-threatening injuries. The girlfriend was treated at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. She was initially arrested but has now been released, pending further investigation, police said.

Detectives are investigating and considering filing charges — spousal battery for the man and assault with a deadly weapon for the woman — with the Orange County district attorney’s office.
