Firefighters responded to a car fire at Bristol Street and Hotel Way in Costa Mesa on Thursday afternoon. A BMW ignited there about 2:30, fire officials said.

“Basically, a gal was driving and saw smoke coming out of her dash, and she got out of her car and it went up,” fire Capt. Shawn Brosamer said.

Firefighters were unsure what started the fire but were able to knock down the flames quickly without any injuries, Brosamer said.

“It was pretty weird,” he said.

A unit of firefighters headed to a training class were near the incident and responded while another unit was dispatched, Brosamer said.

Flames destroyed the engine and passenger compartments, according to the captain.

“It was gutted,” he added.
