McCray, John Woodworth

John Woodworth McCray died on December 28, 2012 at age 73, surrounded by his family at his home in Newport Beach, California. Born and raised in Toluca Lake, California, the son of Ruth Woodworth McCray and Alan Archer McCray, he spent his youth in the Los Angeles area, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Hromadka McCray, in the 7th grade. He attended the Harvard School in Los Angeles, and enjoyed a sampling of colleges, including Stanford University and the University of Arizona, his alma mater. Together, John and Beth settled in Newport Beach to raise their family, where Mr. McCray built a properous real estate development and management company. He greatly enjoyed time on the water, serving as Commodore of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club; traveled extensively to Baja California, Mexico; and could be found weekly on the golf course. Known for his quiet sense of humor and his devotion to family and friends, Mr. McCray will be remembered as a respected and loved member of the community. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth; his three children, Anne McCray Pauley, John W. McCray, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, and Molly McCray; and granddaughters, Brooke Pauley, Kara Pauley, and Lucy Q. McCray.
A memorial celebration will be held Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, 720 West Bay Avenue, Balboa, CA 92661. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Mr. McCray’s memory be made to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1779, Newport Beach, CA 92659 (tax ID #95-4023430), or a charity of your choice.
