Newport company recognized for work at Soka University

A Newport Beach-based construction company received an award for its projects at Soka University in Aliso Viejo.

The Construction Management Assn. of America Southern California Chapter recognized McCarthy Building Cos. with its Project Achievement Award in May for its work on the university’s Performing Arts Center and adjacent academic building, according to a news release from McCarthy.

McCarthy applied for the award because of its use of sustainability features, including the incorporation of solar panels on the facility’s roof and other aspects in the interior and exterior, said Jim Madrid, vice president of business development at McCarthy.

“It’s a very innovative project as far as construction technology goes,” Madrid said.

CMAA gives Project Achievement Awards to companies for challenging and completed construction projects, according to the CMAA website.

Soka’s three-story Performing Arts Center, which opened in September, has also been lauded for its superior acoustics. The adjacent building contains classrooms, offices and dressing rooms.

McCarthy is one of the largest commercial construction companies in Orange County.

It teamed up with other construction companies on three projects that also received awards, including John Wayne Airport, the Westminster Police Department headquarters and Methodist Hospital of Southern California in Arcadia.
