Coast Inn granted two-year extension on remodel

The Planning Commission at its June 27 meeting unanimously approved a two-year extension for the renovation of the Coast Inn, the former home of the Boom Boom Room.

Morris Skenderian and Associates, the architect overseeing the project for Coast Inn owner Emerald Financial LLC, requested the extension to “allow sufficient time to address an appeal of our approvals by the California Coastal Commission and assuming a successful resolution, sufficient time to complete construction documents and processing for building permits.”

In August 2010, the Coastal Commission appealed the City Council’s approval of the remodel plans.

The proposed scales down the previous 24-room hotel into a 10-suite boutique hotel with room for a small retail tenant and a 13-space parking garage.

According to the staff report, the project was reviewed and found to still be in “compliance with applicable zoning codes and standards,” including no change to the neighborhood’s character.

Any decision can be appealed within two calendar weeks after a decision by the commission.
