School board takes no action in closed session [Corrected]
COSTA MESA — After nearly two and a half hours Tuesday night, the Newport-Mesa Unified school board did not take any action during its special closed-session meeting on an interim superintendent.
FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version incorrectly stated that the director of certificated personnel was present at Tuesday’s closed session and that the school board would meet in public Wednesday. In fact, the director was not at Tuesday’s meeting and the board will again meet in closed session Wednesday.
The board will continue the closed-doors meeting 4 p.m. Wednesday, said board President Dave Brooks.
It is unclear whether the board is choosing an interim superintendent.
The school district’s lawyer was present in the closed session.
The district has been without its top leader since former Supt. Jeffrey Hubbard was unanimously fired Jan. 23 after being convicted of two felony counts of misappropriation of public funds related to his previous job as head of the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
Deputy Supt. and Chief Business Official Paul Reed will act as superintendent until March 5, or until an interim leader can be found.
The school board is looking to find a permanent superintendent by July 1.
The board will recess into closed session at 4 p.m. in the Roderick H. MacMillian Board Room at the District Education Center, 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa, before recessing into closed session.
