An 18-year-old man was arrested in Costa Mesa after mistaking an off-duty Huntington Beach police officer for a friend he didn’t like, following him home and pelting him with eggs, police said Tuesday.

The Santa Barbara resident was arrested about 2:36 a.m. Monday near Shantar Drive and Adams Avenue after he and at least one friend followed the officer home, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Jerry Hildeman.

When the officer stepped out of his car, the teens pelted him with eggs. The suspect was subsequently arrested for misdemeanor vandalism, throwing something from a vehicle and reckless driving, according to Hildeman and arrest records.
