Man charged with killing his father during argument

The arraignment of a man who was arrested after calling Huntington Beach police to report he shot his father was continued to June 17.

Jeremy Dwayne Martin, 35, is charged with killing his father after the two had an argument over his firearm, which he kept at home, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

If convicted, Martin faces up to 50 years in prison. He is being held on $1-million bail. His arraignment was originally scheduled for May 24 at the Central Jail in Santa Ana, said Farrah Emami, the DA’s spokeswoman.

Martin, who lived with his father in Huntington Beach, called police about 8:30 a.m. Friday to report the shooting, said Lt. Russell Reinhart.

Upon arrival, police found Frederick Dwayne Martin, 62, dead at the scene. His son was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, Reinhart said.

Earlier in the day, the two had an argument when the father became unhappy with his son for keeping a gun at home, according to prosecutors.

Frederick Dwayne Martin took the gun from his son, but his son later regained it through a struggle, prosecutors said.

Frederick Dwayne Martin called police and asked that they investigate the incident, but never mentioned the gun, prosecutors said. When police arrived at the home, Jeremy Dwayne Martin refused to talk to officers and they left.

Another argument ensued and Jeremy Dwayne Martin allegedly shot his father once, prosecutors said.
