Jamaican Purim at Chabad

Chabad Jewish Center will host Purim Jamaica, an island-themed holiday bash, at 5 p.m. March 20 at the Chabad Jewish Center, 30804 S. Coast Hwy.

Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people in the fourth century B.C.E. from one of the most colorful villains in Jewish history. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or “Scroll of Esther,” sending food portions to friends, giving money to the poor and enjoying a festive meal, according to a news release.

The event, for all ages, features a Megillah reading, reggae music and a Drum Café with local musicians Jah Amen Mobely and David Gad, plus island-themed crafts for kids, face painting, hair beading and a Jamaican barbecue buffet.

All are welcome to join and, in the spirit of Purim, wear costumes. Admission is $15 for adults; $10 for children ages 3 to 12. To attend, make reservations at https://www.chabadoflaguna.com or (949) 499-0770.
