Prom dresses sought for teens

Girls, Inc., Women Helping Women, Orange Coast College and the Orangewood Children’s Foundation are collecting gently used prom and party dresses for their upcoming “Belle of the Ball” event for foster and at-risk teen girls in Orange County. They are hoping to collect more than 300 dresses so that each girl has her choice of size, style and color. Contemporary and plus-size dresses, as well as accessories like dress shoes, jewelry and evening bags are also needed by March 5. Visit https://www.orangewoodfoundation.org/belle.

Youth theater show on eating disorders

To honor National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and help educate Laguna’s youth about these potentially fatal disorders, the Laguna Playhouse Theatre for a New Generation will perform “Eat (It’s Not About Food)” from Thursday through Feb. 12 at the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

Written by Linda Daugherty and directed by Kelly Herman, the production explores the causes and warning signs of eating disorders, and investigates the societal influences that lead young people to struggle with the disease, according to a Laguna Playhouse press statement. The show is suitable for teens, parents and educators.

Festival of Arts scholarships open

Festival Of Arts Scholarship applications are now available to graduating high school seniors who live in Laguna Beach or attend Laguna Beach High School who want to pursue college studies in film, performing arts, visual arts and writing. Applicants may apply for any or all four categories, but will be awarded a scholarship in only one. Students with talents in multiple art fields are encouraged to submit an application in more than one category.

Auditions and interviews will be scheduled in March and April. Scholarship awards begin at a minimum of $1,000 and can be renewed for a total of four one-year scholarships. Students must return each summer to reapply for a continuation of scholarship status.

The FOA scholarship program has supported young artists for more than 50 years, by making it possible for students to pursue college studies in the arts. Last year, $25,000 was awarded to graduating seniors.

Student artwork at Susi Q

Gallery Q, located in the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St., will feature “Different Strokes,” a collection of painting and mixed-media works by Laguna adult and student artists.

The artists are students in Victoria Templeton’s weekly class. Also on display is a collection of Native American “Spirit Sticks,” created by fifth-grade students in Teryl Campbell’s class from Top of the World Elementary.

LCAD student designs ‘Grapes’ logo

Courtney Maya, a junior studying graphic design at Laguna College of Art and Design, has been chosen as this year’s designer of the Rotary Club’s 2011 Grapes for Grads logo. The logo, which depicts a tall wine glass full of burgundy, displays the event name in a grapevine-like typeface. The image will be used on all Grapes for Grads VI marketing and advertising. Maya will be presented with a $500 scholarship at the Rotary Club Luncheon at noon on Feb. 11 at the Canyon Lodge American Grill, 31106 S. Coast Hwy. The Grapes for Grads fundraising event will be held in late April.
