Keith Baldwin Cleland May 16, 1930 - Aug. 19 201

Keith Baldwin Cleland passed away peacefully with his three daughters by his side in Newport Beach on Aug. 19 after suffering a stroke.

Keith was born in Timmons, Ontario, Canada on May 16, 1930, to Ralph and Helen Cleland. Mining was the family’s business, and he worked summers in the mines from 1947 to 1954. He attended the Provincial School of Mining and graduated from Canada’s Queens University in 1955 with a degree in civil engineering.

In 1957, he moved to Southern Ontario with his wife, Beverly, where he constructed homes and began raising his family. He immigrated to the United States in 1960 settling in Ann Arbor, Mich., and later moved with his family to Southern California. He resided in Whittier, and then moved to Newport Beach in 1974.

In addition to working as a professional engineer and industrial designer, he was an inventor, entrepreneur and business owner. His businesses included Propak of California, Goldhound International Inc., Cleland Mining and Engineering, and Sidehill Golf. He was issued several patents for his innovative designs in the blow molding, mining and golfing industries. His automatic panning device for mining known as “The Goldhound” was sold in more than 33 countries.Keith had recently completed his updated prototype of “The Goldhound” and was in process of implanting the new technology.

Besides industrial design, Keith’s passions were his three daughters, grandchildren, golf, science and sailing. He loved to apply his knowledge of engineering and physics to developing the “perfect golf swing” and enjoyed teaching golf. He was a competitive sailor, and collected many awards with his half ton yacht Rivet.

Keith will be remembered for his generosity, keen intellect, creativity, sense of humor and tenacity at solving mechanical and design problems. He is survived by his adoring daughters, Tracy Bowie, Terri Breer, Lauri Wax, son-in-law Marc Wax, his brother Dave and wife, Helen, his sister Jody Sullivan and her husband, Wayne, his nephews, nieces and their families.

There will be a celebration of Keith’s life from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Balboa Yacht Club.
