Donald James Dabney Oct 4, 1930 - May 28, 2010
Long time Lido Isle resident Don Dabney was born and raised in Los Angeles. He attended Oregon State University and graduated from USC in 1953. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a 1st lieutenant during the Korean War. While stationed at Quantico, Va., he married Diane Huntington and together they had four children. Diane passed away in 1987 and in 1989 Don married Anita Freeman.
He retired from Hughes Aircraft Co., Raytheon Division after a 25-year career as director of human resources. He served on the board of Dabney Lloyd LLC for 20 years. During his retirement, Don was a devoted volunteer with the Newport Beach Public Library Literacy Program, teaching English as a second language.
Following the family’s move to Newport Beach in 1967, he served on the Board of Directors of the Lido Isle Community Assn., as secretary and port captain of the Lido Isle Yacht Club, and as president of LICA from 1993-95.
Throughout his life Don enjoyed a wide range of activities. He was kind, engaging and involved; sharing his love of geography, travel, camping, tennis, sailing, biking, classic cars and cooking with his children and grandchildren. Don is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Anita, his four children: Hunt Dabney (Candi), Matt Dabney, Alyce Dabney Hinshaw (Marc), Donn Dabney (SuJean); two step daughters: Heidi Dobrott (John), Hanna Skjonsby (Greg); 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
