The following is from the June 1 meeting of the Laguna Beach City Council.

Arts, Planning Commission appointments

Artists Nick Hernandez and Gerard Basil Stripling and incumbent Mary Pratt Ferguson were appointed to the Arts Commission.

Incumbents Anne Johnson, Robert J. Whalen and Rob M Zur Schmiede were reappointed to the Planning Commission.

Parking committee recommendations

The Parking Traffic and Circulation Committee made three recommendations, two of which were unanimously adopted. The recommendation to restrict parking around the 90-degree turn in the vicinity of 31321 Ceanothus Drive in South Laguna, which has divided residents, was modified.

The committee also submitted its annual report, which was accepted and will be filed.

WHAT IT MEANS

The council voted 4 to 1, Egly dissenting, to expand the asphalt, install a guard rail and leave the parking as is for now on Ceanothus.

The council adopted resolutions to convert the existing yellow loading zone on the northwesterly side of the 300 block of Brooks Street to a white loading zone and to prohibit parking for five feet in front of the walkway at 514 Poplar St.

City to buy, distribute reusable grocery bags

The council unanimously approved the purchase of 2,000 recycled, reusable grocery bags, to be funded by grants. The bags will be adorned with Bill Atkins’ design of a bird, one of the three he submitted to the city. Staff preferred a logo depicting the lifeguard tower at Main Beach.

WHAT IT MEANS

The free bags will be distributed to the public at A Day Without a Bag event, in support of recycling. No date and no plan on who will get the bags were announced.

Pearson will write a letter of appreciation to Atkins.
