LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High senior Jaycee Olsen won the shot put and discus and finished second in the 200 meters to help the Sea Kings girls’ track and field team to the Pacific Coast League title Friday at Laguna Hills High.

Melanie Powers won the 1,600 and 3,200, while Lelia Pozin won the 300 hurdles. Times and marks were not available.

Marisa Cummings, Ali Hummelberg and Sarah Keddington followed in succession behind Powers in the 1,600, while Cummings and Hummelberg went 2-3 in the 3,200.

The CdM boys’ team took third at the PCL meet.

The Sea Kings’ Brent Gray was named Co-MVP of the meet. He won the 100 and 200 and was part of the victorious 4x100 relay team, that also included Cole Cottrell, Jeff Condino and Thomas Testini.

Blake Myers won the 8000 and 1,600.

BASEBALL

Estancia 1, Laguna Beach 0

COSTA MESA — Eagles’ senior right-handed pitcher Marc DeFrenza earned his seventh win, throwing a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts while allowing five hits and two walks in an Orange Coast League game Friday.

DeFrenza improved to 7-3.

Freshman Tyler Rios went two for three with a run scored and three stolen bases for Estancia (15-10, 7-3 in league).

The Eagles will play against Calvary Chapel at Vanguard Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

San Juan Hills 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior outfielder Brian Ford went five for six with two runs batted in and two stolen bases for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Friday.

It was a good day for the outfielders, as senior Chase Carlisle went three for five with two RBIs, and junior Will Morrow went two for four with three RBIs.

Sophomore Brent Lawson went two for four with two RBIs and a home run, his second of the season. Junior Eric Morris earned his sixth win of the season, as he pitched five innings, allowing three hits.

The Sea Kings (10-14, 7-6 in league) will play at Beckman Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — A.J. Wolfson pitched 6 2/3 innings Friday only giving up two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts to help his team improve to 15-5 and 11-2 in the Academy League.

Wolfson also added an RBI-double and a run at the plate, while Michael Yorita also cracked a double, hitting two for four with a run. Darren Hardy went two for four as well with a triple and a run, and Sean Vogel tallied two RBIs on a three-for-five day.

Sage Hill will play at home against Crean Lutheran on Tuesday.

Marina 3, Newport Harbor 2

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sailors stranded nine runners, seven of which were in scoring position, in the Sunset League game Friday.

Catcher Blake Davey, playing with one shoe with cleats and one running shoe due to severe blisters on one foot, went two for two with a walk and an RBI-single in the seventh inning to bring the Sailors within one run.

Jack Grace pitched five innings, giving up one earned run and one unearned on five hits for Newport Harbor (15-9, 5-8 in league).

The Sailors will play at Edison, which is in first place, Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

La Salle 14, Costa Mesa 5

PASADENA — Mustangs pitcher-shortstop Brandon Kelly went two for four with a run scored in the nonleague game Friday.

First baseman Ryan Boulger went one for three with two runs batted in for Costa Mesa (13-12), which will play host to Laguna Beach Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Senior pitcher Kira Mitani went three for six with a single, a double and a triple for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game Friday.

Mitani struck out eight batters in the game and improved her record to 7-0.

Academy League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill School’s third-seeded tandem of Andrew Kurzweil and Alex Manolakas won the doubles title Friday at The Tennis Club.

Kurzweil and Manolakas beat a Whitney High duo, 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals and a St. Margaret’s team, 6-4, 6-1 in the final to take the title. The doubles team will compete in the individual CIF Southern Section Individuals May 21.

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High finished second at Laguna Beach Thursday.

The Mustangs had won four straight league finals titles, including the past three in the OCL.

Still, Costa Mesa had some standout performances.

Senior Kaitlin Yamamoto was named the Female Athlete of the Meet after winning the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles, and finishing second in the 100 hurdles. She was also part of the 4×400 relay team that won.

Yamamoto, the Daily Pilot High School Athlete of the Week, won the pole vault Wednesday with a 9-foot clearance.

She won the 300 hurdles in 48.07, a personal record by a little more than a second. She finished the 100 hurdles in 17.75 seconds, just behind Laguna Beach’s Lauren Montgomery, who won in 17.71.

Tatiana Williams won two events for the Mustangs, finishing first in the triple jump (34-0) and the long jump (15-11.5). Costa Mesa’s Punua Fesli won the discus (90-0) and finished third in the shot put to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division III preliminaries May 15 at Estancia. The top three finishers at OCL finals qualified for CIF.

Costa Mesa’s Jennifer Daley qualified in three events, as she won the 400 in 1:00 and finished third in the high jump (4-10). She was also on the 4×400 team that won in 4:17.

Rachel Witter and Hunter Strodel were also on the 4×400 team.

Costa Mesa’s Bao Truong took third in the girls’ 100 hurdles (18.3).

Laguna Beach won the meet with 143 points and Costa Mesa had 112.

Estancia’s Diana Guido, Mariah Chapin and Erika Garcia also qualified for the CIF Division III preliminaries. Guido finished second in the 300 hurdles in 49.78. Chapin took third in the 400 in 1:03 and Garcia was third in the 800 in 2:36. It was just the third time Garcia competed in the 800.

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Tabathia Goff placed third in the discus (104 feet, 10 inches Friday.

Casey Thompson was fourth in the discus (100-3) for the Sailors.

Goff and Thompson qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries May 15 at Moorpark High.

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High’s Corbin Kay won the shot put (45 feet, 8 inches) and discus (130-6), as the Mustangs finished fourth.

Laguna Beach won the meet.

Estancia’s Jorge Martin also qualified for the CIF Southern Division III preliminaries May 15 at Estancia. Martin finished third in the 800 in 2 minutes, 4 seconds.

Sunset League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Steve Michaelsen and Ethan Cochran finished third and fourth, respectively, in the discus Friday to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries May 15 at Moorpark High.

Michaelsen’s mark was 104 feet, 10 inches, while Cochran’s was at 166-11.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

MISSION VIEJO — The Sailors were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I Championships at Los Alisos Middle School on Thursday.

Sierra Michaelsen, Taylor Cordeiro, Madeline Storch, Morgan Fabian, Lauren Rojas-Sanchez and Amanda Olevsky had goals for the Sailors (12-9).

Senior Paige More had 16 saves for the Tars, who lose five seniors off their 18-player roster.
