NAC earns success
Riley Ritchie and Michael Reo of the Newport Aquatic Center won the under-16 division title in Catalina Challenge, a 39.8-mile outrigger race from Avalon to Dana Point on Sunday.
Ritchie, 15, and Reo, 14, both students at Newport Harbor High, are believed to be the youngest team members to finish the race in 5 hours, 37 minutes.
The team used Ritchie’s single-man outrigger canoe, switching positions at 25 to 35-minute intervals, as they jumped out of and into the outrigger that was assisted by a chase boat.
Crew wins cup
The Newport Aquatic Center men’s junior varsity crew won the Jean Jessop Hervey Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday.
NAC also won the women’s junior JV Petite title.
This is believed to be the first time in the history of NAC that it has won the Hervey Cup.
Most of the crew were from the “A” novice boat who rowed up to junior varsity.
The members of the crew are: Trevor Russell, Nate Sutterfield, Chase Roossin, Mark Bennett, Jack King, coxswain Alison Deverian, Brett Buettner, Nathan Bryant, and Ron Taitz
