RENO — Senior Eric Pettis pitched eight strong innings to improve to 4-0 this season as the No. 13-ranked Anteaters salvaged the final game of the three-game nonconference baseball series against Nevada Sunday at Peccole Park.

Pettis allowed seven hits and three earned runs and senior Kyle Necke struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning.

Senior catcher Francis Larson went two for four with three runs batted in, while Ronnie Shaeffer homered and drove in two runs for the winners (14-8).

Jonathan Hurst also had two RBIs, while Sean Madigan contributed two hits to the 10-hit attack for UCI.

UCI, which lost a three-game series for the first time since the 2008 Super Regional at LSU, scored four in the fifth to break a 2-2 deadlock and take control.

Nevada fell to 12-11.

The Anteaters begin defense of their Big West Conference championship when they visit Cal State Northridge for a three-game series beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.

They play again Friday at 3 and Saturday at 1.

Cal/Nevada Championships

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine sophomore Charles Jock won the 800 meters at the event at UCLA’s Drake Stadium Sunday, breaking Steve Scott’s school record that stood for 32 years.

Jock’s time of one minute, 47.46 seconds bettered Scott’s mark of 1:47.6 recorded in 1978. Scott was a six-time All-American in track and cross country at UCI, and a three-time Olympian.

Jock, who was named Athlete of the Meet, also anchored UCI’s winning 4x400 relay (3:11.82) that included George Hernandez, Tim Murphy and Jacob Yowell.

In women’s competition, UCI senior Lauren Collins finished second in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Freshman Vanessa Houston finished second in the women’s 100 in 12.05 and she was fifth in the 200 in 24.49.

Yowell finished fourth in the 400 hurdles (52.34) and he was seventh in the 110 high hurdles (14.59). Murphy placed fifth in the 800 (1:51.16).

Hernandez finished sixth in the 400 (48.53) and Aman Bhatia was sixth in the 1,500 (3:54.54).

Chloe Fata was fifth in the women’s 1,500 (4:38.68) and Shelby Pock was eighth (4:40.11).

Sakia Sailinuu was sixth in the 800 (2:14.12) and Kelly Collins was eighth in the 400 hurdles (64.88).

WOMEN’S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

DOVE CANYON — UC Irvine’s Hillary Packard shares the lead after 36 holes on the first day of the 54-hole event at Dove Canyon Country Club.

Packard shot 73 and 70, a one-over-par 143, to join Christine Wong of San Diego State atop the individual leaderboard after Monday’s action.

UCI sophomore Lalita Patipaksiri is tied for 30th at 154 (79-75) and senior Mariko Makabe is tied for 39th at 159 (80-79).

UCI is fifth in the five-school team standings 20 strokes behind leader San Diego State.

The event concludes today with 18 holes.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Visiting Point Loma Nazarene blanked Vanguard in both games to earn the Golden State Athletic Conference sweep Monday.

The Sea Lions followed a 1-0 triumph in Game 1 with a 2-0 victory to improve to 21-5, 11-5 in conference.

Amanda Omahen had a hit in each game for the Lions (20-18, 4-10), who had two hits in the first game and four in the second.

Melissa Forrester threw a complete-game five-hitter in the first game for Vanguard.
