Busch (41-7) wasn’t out of it yet, as he moved down to the consolation bracket. He went up against Max Viczian of Laguna Hills High and beat him, 17-10, to move on to another match. His next opponent was Honey Jordan of Ventura. Jordan pinned Busch in 1:35.

Busch placed second in the Coastal Division tournament last week.

Entering the Masters, he had recorded a school-record 232 takedowns this season, according Coach Gary Almquist.

He had also posted the best CIF finish for a CdM wrestler since 2002, when Steven Russell was a champion. He was the lone wrestler from the Newport-Mesa area to compete in the Masters.

The tournament continues today with wrestlers vying to finish in the top nine to advance to the state meet.
