Roberts, Jillson are Legacy honorees

Al Roberts and Ken Jillson will receive the 2010 Legacy Award from Laguna Beach Seniors Inc. for their decades-long commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Laguna Beach.

Roberts is a co-founder of AIDS Services Foundation Orange County, served as its board president for 20 years, and is a founding board member of Hagen Place, a residence for people with AIDS/HIV.

Jillson, also a member of the AIDS Services Foundation board, has been the creative force behind the Big Splash, the annual all-wet, lip-syncing musical that had its last performance in September.

Big Splash raised more than $10 million for AIDS.

The Legacy Ball will be at [seven degrees] March 26, featuring special celebrity guest Joseph Mascolo. Known for his role as the legendary villain Stefano on “Days of Our Lives,” Mascolo is also known for his Broadway and film acting.

He will be available to meet and greet, sign autographs, and allow photo opportunities with Legacy Ball guests.

New grant program launches

Laguna Beach Community Foundation is accepting applications for its inaugural grant program.

Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded to organizations providing services or programs within the Laguna Beach area.

Grants will be considered for: core operations; capacity building; capital projects and equipment; programs and projects; and training. Eligible groups must be a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and in good standing as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Low-cost pet vaccine clinic is Saturday

The Laguna Beach Animal Shelter will hold its annual low-cost vaccination clinic for dogs and cats from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the shelter, 20612 Laguna Canyon Road.

Vaccinations range from $6 to $15, and micro-chipping is $28.

All dogs must be on leash and all cats must be in carriers.

Council skips a meeting

The City Council canceled the Feb. 16 meeting due to a lack of items and transferred a 4 p.m. closed session for the evaluation of City Manager Ken Frank to March 2.

City wins open space appeal in court

A trial court decision that went against the city was overturned by the Court of Appeals.

A trial court had ruled in favor of a property owner who challenged the city’s open space zoning on a portion of his undeveloped Morningside Drive parcel.

City Atty. Philip Kohn announced at the Feb. 2 council meeting that the Court of Appeals reversed the trial court decision, upholding the city’s position that the property was correctly zoned and a portion of it was open space.
