Seahawks are too much for Oilers in rout
After a single quarter, there was no doubt that the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team had come to play.
And when the Seahawks come to play, there’s not too many teams that can keep up.
Ocean View breezed past host Huntington Beach, 83-38, in a nonleague game Monday night.
The teams’ meetings the past two years had been close; last year Ocean View won on a lay-up with seconds to go.
But this time, there was no such drama. Instead, the Seahawks (14-3) got nine steals in the first quarter, four of those by senior guard Aaron Delgado. They led to four dunks by seniors Anthony Brown and Avery Johnson.
By the time the quarter ended, the young Oilers (6-14) were reeling a bit and down, 26-7.
“We have to have energy from now on,” said Brown, the Stanford commit who finished with 17 points. “We had a couple of speed bumps in December. Me and Avery are the two leaders out there, so we have to ignite it. If we bring it, then everyone will follow.
“We’re working on our half-court offense, but we play well in the open court. We try to use the motto that, ‘Our defense is our offense.’ When we get steals and we play good defense, nobody can stop us. Then the bench comes in. People don’t realize that when the bench comes in, we don’t lose anything. We keep it up.”
Johnson had a well-rounded game with 24 points, six rebounds and eight assists for last year’s CIF State Division III finalists.
Andrew Shigemasa came off the bench for nine points and Billy Keller had eight.
Huntington Beach, which started five juniors, was led by junior Jordan Reise with 11 points.
“We’re just so athletic,” Ocean View Coach Jim Harris said.
“Nobody likes to be pressured. If you’re going to be effective with it, it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, how many guys are out there?’ Especially with young players. Young players don’t know how to elevate their game as the game goes on. The good thing is they’re young, and the bad thing is they’re young. Next year, they’ll [have a lot of] seniors, and we won’t. Every year is different.”
Ocean View faced Orange on Wednesday and will play another Golden West League home game against Saddleback on Friday night. Then, the Seahawks will go to Segerstrom Monday, the start of a big week.
That game is a rescheduled one after the teams’ meeting last week was started, but eventually canceled due to power outages in Santa Ana. The two league contenders will then play against Friday at Ocean View.
“Segerstrom is pretty good,” Brown said. “I’d call it the league championship, so we have to come out ready.”
The Oilers, meanwhile, fell to 2-2 in the Sea View League after falling to Woodbridge on Tuesday night.
“We’re doing all right in league,” Coach Fabian Luna said. “We’re real inconsistent, we’re up and down, just lacking that leadership and that experience to kind of pull things over the top We’re one of the defending league champions, so we’re hoping to defend that. We just have to take care of home court. We haven’t lost a whole lot of times at home.”
