IRVINE — Visiting Concordia University, an NAIA school, surprised UC Irvine, 57-56, in the Anteaters’ preseason men’s basketball exhibition game Monday at the Bren Events Center.

UCI junior guard Patrick Rembert missed a desperation three-point try from near halfcourt and the buzzer, allowing the Eagles to lead the entire second half.

Junior guard Darren Moore led UCI with 14 points, while sophomore Eric Wise had 11 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with seven.

UCI missed all four of its three-point field-goal tries, while Concordia was seven of 20 from threedom.

UCI opens its regular season Friday at home against La Verne, an NCAA Division III school.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UConn 98, Vanguard 68

HARTFORD, Conn. — Rachel Copeland had 19 points and Bridgette Reyes added 17 for the Lions in the exhibition loss Monday to the reigning NCAA champions.

Copeland made five of eight three-point field-goal tries.

MEN’S WATER POLO

IRVINE — UC Irvine dropped a pair of matches Sunday, falling to No. 10-ranked Concordia, 10-9, after absorbing a 12-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss to No. 3-ranked Stanford.
