In response to the shortage of key staples needed by the Orange County Rescue Mission for its food boxes, Newport Beach-based Daddy Cakes® set an example for other area businesses to follow by hosting a pancake breakfast that collected 375 pounds of canned goods and raised enough funds to feed 231 hungry children, women and men. The public was invited to donate either $5 per person or bring five cans of food/non-perishable items to the breakfast held at the OC Rescue Mission’s Village of Hope and, in addition to Daddy Cakes pancakes, enjoyed coffee provided by Peet’s Coffee & Tea at The District in Tustin.

In addition, Daddy Cakes served breakfast to the approximately 200 residents at the Village of Hope and donated 150 one-pound pouches of pancake and waffle mix, which is the equivalent of more than 3,100 pancakes. These will be used in food boxes delivered to homeless and families affected by the recession throughout Orange County.

“These days, $1.48 won’t buy much – not even a cup of coffee at many establishments, but at the Orange County Rescue Mission, this small amount can provide a complete meal for a hungry child, woman, or man. Our two-hour pancake breakfast raised enough funds to feed 231 individuals, as well as 375 pounds of donated goods,” commented Dan Byers, founder of Daddy Cakes. “As the effects of the recession deepen, the number of families who rely on the assistance of shelters in our area has been skyrocketing. In response to calls for help, Daddy Cakes coordinated a pancake breakfast with government officials and donated to the food boxes at a shelter in Costa Mesa, and now, will host this similar event and donate 125 food boxes for families served by the Orange County Rescue Mission.”
