For the love of locks

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Laguna hairstylist Heather Simpson is donating pink hair extensions through her business, Lots of Locks, to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“I was inspired by So.Cap.USA’s ‘Pink Hair for Hope’ program and wanted to do something similar,” she said. “This program is especially important to me because my mother is a breast cancer survivor.

“Pink hair makes a funkier statement than wearing a pink ribbon.”

Extensions are created from authentic human hair and are available in two shades of pink: hot and light.

They are easily applied with a metal clip, will endure swimming and showering and last until you take them out.

Each extension costs $10, which Simpson will donate to the foundation.

“I chose this organization because in addition to breast cancer research, they provide a web community for people affected by this disease as well as their loved ones, which I appreciate,” Simpson said. “It not only educates and spreads awareness, but helps people who have already been affected.”

Her mother, Sandra, was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago.

“It was such a difficult time for my siblings and me,” Simpson said. “I’ve [participated] in runs and other events to benefit research, and this is just another outlet — a fun one that’s more in line with my [creative] side.

“I’ve had a great response so far, and if clients continue to show interest, I plan to continue the program through November.”

Simpson established Lots of Locks two years ago, when she saw the need for a more affordable method of applying hair extensions.

“Most services cost around $1,000, and I wanted to make them accessible to more women in Orange County, not just those with lots of expendable cash,” she said. “Another benefit of the less expensive method I use is that it does not require glue, heated bonding or harsh chemicals.”

Simpson provides custom-color matching, often using a blend of colors for each client.

Services start at $299.

Lots of Locks operates through Simpatico Salon, at 1100 S. Coast Hwy. For more information about Simpson’s services, call (949) 280-5782 or visit www.lotsoflocks.com. Services are by appointment only.
