SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine won the men’s team title as sophomore Rex Nelson finished third Saturday at Cuesta College.
Nelson, a Newport Harbor High product, completed the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 5.6 seconds to help UCI compile 29 points, 10 better than runner-up Cal Poly.
The Anteaters’ Victor Bonilla (sixth in 27:19.5), Brett Matejka (10th in 27:54.3), Sam Hyams (12th in 28:00.0), Barrett Tilley (14th in 28:05.9), Austin Williams (18th in 28:14.5) and Eric Hansen (19th in 28:16.0) also contributed.
The UCI women finished third with 68 points, behind UCLA (31) and Cal Poly (37). Freshman Chloe Fata topped the UCI women, placing ninth on the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:54.3.

FULLERTON — Kelsey Wirt had 23 kills and 17 digs to help lead the No. 10-ranked Lions to a 25-18, 21-25, 32-34, 25-19, 16-14 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.
Heather DeJongh had 19 kills, while Jamie Heenan added 14 kills and 17 digs for Vanguard (14-7, 8-4 in conference).
