Seahawks even their record after 27-3 win

For more than two games, the offense had failed to get going.

That all changed Friday night for the Ocean View High football team, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Seahawks.

Ocean View (2-2) outscored visiting Costa Mesa, 27-0, in the second half of a 27-3 nonleague victory on homecoming night at Ocean View High.

The Seahawks had scored just one offensive touchdown in their first three games. But, against Costa Mesa, they began running behind the combined 575 pounds of senior linemen Kody Afusia and Charlie Webb. The first touchdown came through the air, sophomore quarterback Nolan Tippy finding junior receiver Blake Walker on a 43-yard strike midway through the third quarter.

Two plays later, Costa Mesa quarterback Todd Davis was knocked out of the game on a big hit by Webb, and the Seahawks scored again when hard-to-tackle sophomore Timmy Robinson rumbled in from 10 yards out.

“We came out with vengeance [in the second half],” Tippy said. “We couldn’t lose at home. We pounded it and pounded it, and that opened up the passing game.”

Tippy added two quarterback keepers for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ice it.

The Costa Mesa running game never got going, as the Mustangs combined for minus-nine net yards on 21 carries. Afusia and Webb were also key contributors for Ocean View on the defensive side.

“I’m extremely proud of our defensive line,” Afusia said. “We stepped it up really big. A lot of props to them.”

Ocean View will look to keep its momentum going this week, as the Seahawks play at Estancia (4-1). Estancia running back Alex Abalos has emerged as a top running back in the county and has 963 yards in five games.

FRIDAY

San Juan Hills (2-2) at Huntington Beach (2-2), 7 p.m.: The Oilers’ homecoming game comes against a fairly new school with no seniors, yet Coach Eric Lo said the Stallions possess an impressive offense. They’re coming off a 48-40 win over Segerstrom.

“They only have juniors, but they’re very good offensively,” Lo said.

The Oilers are coming off a tight 19-16 win over Westminster. Jack Dilbeck ran for 204 yards, 135 of those in the first quarter, as Huntington opened a 16-0 lead. Yet Westminster clawed back before a decisive fourth-quarter field goal by the Oilers’ Eric Chan.

“I thought we played good enough to win,” Lo said. “Dilbeck had two long touchdown runs, one of them on a fake punt.”

Western (0-4) vs. Marina (0-4) at Westminster High, 7 p.m.: The Vikings are coming off a 41-8 loss to Aliso Niguel. Delano Douglas scored on a 96-yard kickoff return to account for Marina’s points, and Cash Duarte scored the conversion.

Western is also looking for its first win, coming off a 52-0 loss to Tustin. Last year, the Pioneers prevailed over Marina in a tight 14-13 game.

Northwood (2-2) at Los Amigos (0-4), 7 p.m.: The Lobos, after a tough 21-20 loss to Santa Ana, are still looking for their first win. Leonard Zambrano had three rushing touchdowns and 194 yards for Los Amigos, but the Lobos couldn’t hold a 20-7 lead.

Chadwick (4-0) at Brethren Christian (2-2), 7 p.m.: The Warriors lost to St. Anthony, 14-7, last week despite 115 yards and a touchdown from Ryan Randall.

Chargers, Barons earn wins

Edison and Fountain Valley are on bye this week. But the Chargers, the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division poll, and the No. 5-ranked Barons both had memorable games last week.

Edison (5-0) defeated Mater Dei, 36-29, in double overtime at Santa Ana Stadium while Fountain Valley (5-0) topped Scripps Ranch, 42-14.

The Chargers were led by senior Matt Viles, who threw three touchdown passes (two to Dylan Leener and one to Michael Rivera). He also had a season-high three interceptions, but scored the game-winning touchdown on a seven-yard draw in the second overtime.

Senior Luke Gane stuffed a Mater Dei run on fourth-and-goal, securing the win.

“We didn’t play very well, and they had a lot to do with it,” Coach Dave White said. “Mater Dei played a great game and we were out of sync a lot. We didn’t play as good as we’re capable of on either side of the ball, but we found a way to win. I think that’s a sign of a good team, not playing your best game and still beating a really good opponent.”

The Barons’ win, meanwhile, was highlighted by senior Kyle Middlebrooks and his 270 yards rushing. He was just 11 yards short of the school record, but declined to be put back in during the fourth quarter of the blowout victory.

“It was kind of crazy,” said Middlebrooks, who scored four touchdowns. “I didn’t think I had that much. When they told me I had 250, I couldn’t believe it. But I can [set the record] later. Next week we’ve got Marina and it’s our homecoming game, so that would be cool.”

Middlebrooks is always a focus, but others are getting it done as well. Quarterback Dominic Ragland and receiver Ryan Steadman also had touchdown runs for Fountain Valley.

“We have more weapons this year,” Middlebrooks said. “We’re more spread around; we have players on offense and defense. We just want to keep our momentum up.”
