About a dozen police officers evacuated residents of an apartment complex as a man allegedly fired off rounds from his shotgun inside his apartment after a fight with his girlfriend Monday morning.

Police surrounded the apartment for nearly three hours until officers managed to talk Matthew Michael Chapman, 31, into surrendering, said Lt. Russell Reinhart of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Chapman was arrested after the nearly three-hour standoff with the department in the 7200 block of Toulouse Drive for assault with a deadly weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm and possession of a sawed-off shotgun, Reinhart said.

The police were called by Chapman’s girlfriend at 6:05 a.m. after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at her during a domestic dispute.

The woman ran out of the house and Chapman began firing inside the apartment, police said. No one was hurt in the incident.
