Club members camp at Catalina

Seventeen members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach recently returned from a four-day, three-night camping trip on Catalina Island, where they enjoyed all of the outdoor activities the island has to offer.

Campers made the Two Harbors campground their home, where they had a cluster of campsites all to themselves with a view of the shoreline and harbor, and enjoyed an array of activities including hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, tree swinging, swimming and rock jumping.

Campers said they were amazed to see so much Catalina wildlife “” families of deer, diving pelicans, lines of quail and marine life “” close up. One group of kayakers even spotted a sea turtle. Seasoned campers and staffers also enjoyed teaching the basics to newcomers, who learned how to set up tents and cook outdoors.

Homework help available at Club

As kids get ready to go back to school, plans are underway at the Boys & Girls Club to help with the transition. This fall the club is rolling out a new approach to homework help that includes designating two separate homework sites that foster and support productive time to complete homework.

Equipped with supplies, space and qualified homework assistance professionals, the club will be able to provide homework support better than before.

Club members will work on homework with their peers in their appropriate age and grade, which will help the kids focus and support one another.

The “homework express” program will continue to connect district teachers with the club’s education director, Karen Crumlich, with school bus drivers will providing homework packets for each teacher in all grades at the two elementary schools.

“We are willing to help any club member in every way possible to help him or her succeed,” Crumlich said. “We know here at the Boys & Girls Club that the key to success for our club kids is giving them the tools and guiding them along the way.”

For more information about the homework program, contact Crumlich at (949) 494-2535 ext. 109.
