Sea Kings honored in league
First baseman Danny Moskovits, center fielder John Doering and second baseman Michael Bloom each received first-team All-Pacific Coast League laurels after the seniors led the Corona del Mar High baseball team to a runner-up finish in league and the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.
The Sea Kings (18-11, 11-4 in league) went from missing the playoffs in 2008 for the first time under Coach John Emme to one win away in 2009 from possibly getting Emme his third section championship in 12 years.
In CdM’s 6-3 victory at Los Altos of Hacienda Heights in the quarterfinals, Emme collected his 200th career victory.
The Harvard-bound Moskovits returns to the first team after being a second-team pick in 2008. Moskovits batted .333, led the team with 39 runs batted in, 14 doubles and 36 runs scored, and he finished tied for first with six home runs.
This is the first time Doering and Bloom made the first team.
Doering hit .383 with 32 runs, 14 RBIs, seven doubles and led the team with 10 stolen bases. The leadoff hitter’s on-base percentage was .453.
The Orange Coast College-bound Bloom batted .361 with 37 RBIs, six home runs and eight doubles.
Making the second team for the Sea Kings were senior pitcher Steven Manning (5-4, 3.79 earned-run average), senior outfielder Mitch Sands (.444 average, seven doubles, no errors) and junior catcher Beau Attyah (.424 average, 21 RBIs, two homers).
Beckman’s Kyle Boudreau and Laguna Hills’ Robert Refsnyder shared the Pacific Coast League MVP award.
Ryan Harris of Beckman was the league’s pitcher of the year.
