Di Giulio brothers in quarterfinals
FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Joseph Di Giulio and his younger brother, Austin, both Newport Beach residents, advanced to today’s quarterfinals in their respective singles divisions of the 107th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships.
Joseph Di Giulio, the No. 2 seed in the boys’ 14 singles division, defeated Murrieta’s Henry Craig, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Joseph Di Giulio will face the No. 8 seed, Brendan McClain of Ventura, at 2:45 p.m. at Fountain Valley Tennis Center.
Austin Di Giulio, the No. 2 seed in the boys’ 10 singles division, will play against Patrick Trhac of San Diego, the No. 7 seed, at 9:45 a.m. at the Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club. Austin Di Giulio beat ninth-seeded Alex Kuperstein of Palm Desert, 6-1, 6-1, to advance.
In the boys’ 18 singles division, Costa Mesa resident Christopher Freeman got knocked into consolation play after losing to No. 3-seeded Daniel Kosakowski of Downey, 3-6, 3-6.
In the girls’ 18 singles division, Corona del Mar High senior-to-be Melissa Matsuoka will also be playing in the consolation first round after losing to Natalie Johnson, 4-6, 1-6. Newport Beach resident Mazy Watrous reached the Round of 32 in the girls’ 16 singles division and lost to No. 5-seeded Hailey Johnson, 3-6, 1-6.
