SANTA BARBARA HIGH — The Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team showed some fight in a tough semifinal match, but could not complete a comeback at the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High Saturday.

Santa Barbara upended the Sailors, the tournament’s defending champions, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12, sending Newport Harbor to the third-place match.

The Sailors (16-7), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I, then lost to No. 6-ranked Long Beach Wilson in four games.

Against Santa Barbara, ranked No. 3 in CIF Division I, sophomore Cody Caldwell led the way with 24 kills and 13 digs. Senior JB Green had 11 kills, as did Hamilton Day, who added three aces. Jackson Carmack had 21 assists and 11 digs, Darren Leggett finished with 25 assists and 11 digs and Will Connelly had five blocks.

Wilson beat Newport Harbor, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21. Caldwell had 19 kills against the Bruins, while Connor Curry contributed 19 digs and two aces. Leggett recorded 19 assists and Carmack had 18 assists.

In the quarterfinals, late Friday night, Newport Harbor defeated Dos Pueblos of Goleta, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23. Caldwell had 20 kills and two aces, while Green and Day had 10 kills each. Leggett added 24 assists and six digs, Carmack had 12 assists and Curry had six digs and two aces.

Mira Costa won the tournament with a five-game victory over the Dons in the final.

CdM takes fifth

Senior middle blocker Dylan Davis combined for 31 kills and six solo blocks, leading the Sea Kings to a fifth-place showing at the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions after sweeping Foothill and Dos Pueblos at Santa Barbara High Saturday.

CdM (18-6), ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, beat Foothill, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17, before defeating Dos Pueblos, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.

In the Sea Kings’ final match to improve to 3-1 in the tournament, Davis recorded 16 kills on 39 attempts and no errors. The UC Santa Barbara-bound player had four solo blocks. Danny Baker finished with 10 digs, best total for a three-game match.

“It was a bit of a tough one,” CdM Coach Steve Conti said of the tournament in which the Sea Kings placed third last season. “These four tough [matches] were good for us and it will prepare for us CIF.”
