COSTA MESA — Senior Sarah Howe went a combined five for seven with five runs batted in and a triple and double in the Lions’ nonconference doubleheader Friday.

Kasey Klarenbach went six for eight and scored three runs for Vanguard (13-10).

Pitcher Patricia Olvera earned the win in the first game to improve to 6-3.

COSTA MESA — Junior Florian Lemke and sophomore Nils Iwdal earned two-set victories in No. 1 and No. 6 singles play, helping the No. 8-ranked Lions in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday.

Vanguard (7-4, 4-4 in conference), which has won two straight, plays host to Amherst College Monday at 2 p.m.

IRVINE — The Anteaters split a doubleheader Friday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UCI won five of the six matches in singles against Portland and took all three in doubles to earn one team point.

Senior Wes Miller, a Corona del Mar High product, and sophomore Khunpol Issara won at No. 1 doubles.

Freshman Fabian Matthews, also out of Corona del Mar, won in singles in each match.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

IRVINE — Freshman Melissa Boyer won in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles action in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

OCC improved to 8-1, 6-1 in conference.

IRVINE — Gianna Rossi scored five goals to tie a career high for the No. 9-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference game Friday night at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Rossi’s five goals ties the third highest single match total in UCI history.

Junior Erin Kiene had three goals. Senior Julia Fancher had two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Davis had five saves in the first half for UCI (12-5).

Freshman Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor product, had three saves in the second half against the No. 18-ranked Roadrunners.

The ‘Eaters built a 4-2 lead in the first quarter as senior Rossi recorded two of her five goals.

UCI led 6-3 following a power play goal by Rossi with 5:20 left in the second period. The Roadrunners fought back with a pair of goals to cut the lead to 6-5 with 2:17 remaining in the half. UCI scored two goals in the next 53 seconds to take an 8-5 lead with 1:24 on the clock. The Anteaters scored two goals to start the third period to take a 10-5 lead 2:12 into the period.

The ‘Eaters will be off from competition next week due to finals and return to action March 24, when they play host to Brown at 7 p.m.
