IRVINE — The 49ers’ Kaiti O’Brien made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left, helping Long Beach State escape with the Big West Conference win Thursday at the Bren Events Center.

The free throws put Long Beach State (8-18, 4-9 in conference) up four, before UCI’s Rebecca Maessen hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.

Kirian Ishizaki had 17 points for the Anteaters (6-21, 3-11), who never led in the second half. Maessen added 16 points and Kelly Cochran tallied 14 before fouling out.

AZUSA — Betyel Tesfa, Kateryna Malakhova and Anna Valingsten each won in singles for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Thursday.

Hana Jurcovicova and Malakhova won at No. 1 doubles for Vanguard (3-2, 3-2 in conference).

REDDING — Sarah Howe had five hits, six runs and three RBIs for the Lions in the nonconference doubleheader Thursday.

Amanda Young went two for four with four RBIs in Vanguard’s 19-2 win, while Brittany Parlopino went two for five with three RBIs in that game.

Jennifer Bergh went two for three with two RBIs in the opening game.

The Lions improved to 7-4.

Sophomore pitcher Patrica Olvera struck out four in her complete-game win for the 7-2 victory. She allowed 10 hits.
