Harbor’s Whiteside honored among juniors
Newport Harbor High outside linebacker Cecil Whiteside was named to the second-team multi-purpose CalHiSports.com All-State Underclass Football Team for juniors.
Whiteside, a two-time Newport-Mesa Dream Team Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 55 tackles and led the Sailors with six sacks, eight hurries and two blocked punts.
As a wide receiver, the 6-3, 207-pounder finished with 33 catches for 429 yards and seven touchdowns.
Whiteside, a Sunset League first-team selection, helped Newport Harbor (7-3, 3-2 in league) to a share of the Sunset League championship, the program’s first in the league since 1974.
