SAN LUIS OBISPO — OCC sophomore first baseman Beck Wheeler made a great diving backhanded catch that prevented a base hit with two runners on and two out in the bottom of the ninth inning in the nonleague game Thursday.
Wheeler also went two for two with three walks and two runs scored.
Sophomore catcher D.J. Arellano was two for five with two doubles and three RBIs. Scott Stidham, the Pirates’ freshman designated hitter, finished two for four with three RBIs and one run. He hit a two-run home run to right field in the seventh inning that put OCC (2-0) up, 8-4.
Sophomore Drew Hillman went two for four with two doubles, one run and one RBI, Freshman Scott Hong was two for four with a run and sophomore Brett Wallach went two for three with two runs and one RBI.
The Pirates had leads of 1-0, 3-1, 6-2, and 8-4 before holding on for the win.
Cuesta outhit Orange Coast, 15-14.
The Pirates will play against Cuesta (1-2) again today at 2 p.m.

RIVERSIDE – Junior guard Rebecca Maessen had 14 points and six rebounds and sophomore center Kim Barnes added 12 points and eight boards for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference road game Wednesday.
UCI (4-16, 1-6 in conference) shot just 28.6% from the field after halftime and 31.7% for the game.
Senior Kemie Nkele was four of six from three-point range and led the Highlanders (10-9, 6-1) with 22 points.
UC Riverside forced the Anteaters into 22 turnovers. The Highlanders shot 46.9% from the field and a season-high 63.6% (seven of 11) from three-point range.
UCI will play at Long Beach State Saturday at 5 p.m.
