YOUTH SCENE:
Emily Rodriguez, Amy Heil, Doris Carona, Kirsten Gyorgi, Liz Trujillo and Shannon Curran have been busy with soccer games and practices the past few weeks. They plan on keeping a busy schedule in the weeks ahead.
The six girls are a part of two teams that are still playing deep into the AYSO postseason.
They are on the Costa Mesa 12-and-under Gold All-Stars who are 2-0-2 in an area tournament that has the winner advancing to a regional tournament Feb. 21-22 in San Diego. The champion of the tournament in San Diego moves on to the state finals in Sacramento in March.
The Costa Mesa All-Stars play their final pool-play game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Balearic Park in Costa Mesa, trying to advance to the semifinals, which are next weekend.
The All-Stars also include: Ali Miller, Bianca Settgast, Briana Covarrubias, Bridgette Shoenberger, Carolyn Stephens, Hail Bond, Lindsey Grady and Olivia Warner.
Rodriguez, Heil, Carona, Gyorgi, Trujillo and Curran also play for the Costa Mesa Darts, a girls’ under-12 team from AYSO Region 120. The Darts are preparing for the Southern California regional tournament, which will be in San Diego Feb. 14-16.
The tournament includes eight teams with the winner advancing to the state finals in March in Sacramento.
The Darts captured the Region 120 title and also won the Area Q championship.
The Darts also include: Sienna Tonner, Franky Bertella, Diana Gonzales, Julie Roche, Page LaBare, Kyra Page and Ashley Labrado.

Newport-Mesa Sailors 60, Anaheim Hills Raiders 47: The Sailors (6-2) used a swarming defense and strong interior play defeating the Raiders by 13 on the road Sunday night. Derek Kula had a strong game with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals, while John Harzan added 11 points and seven rebounds. Blake Grable had his best outing of the season hitting two three-pointers on his way to 10 points and three assists. Nick Hanna (eight points), Diego Morales (four), Drew Olson (five), Robbie Rettig (two) and Blake Motal (two) rounded out the Sailor scoring. Reid Meckler and Connor Kelly both played key minutes in the win.

Girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade
Division II
Newport Mesa 29, Huntington Beach 18: Stellar defense played by Erin Hatch led to the Newport-Mesa win. Meanwhile, Maria King and Madison Ongstad controlled the boards, each one pulling down eight rebounds each. Heidi Ritner hit a clutch free throw down the stretch to cap a 7-2 run by the Newport Mesa team. The dynamic duo of Taylor Olson and Emily Meckler led all scorers combining for 24 points, each with 12 points apiece.
