Back to basics
Daddy Cakes, a Newport Beach-based line of pancake mixes, is bringing back the old-fashioned pancake breakfast.
Owners (and brothers) Daniel Byers and Levi Silva launched Daddy Cakes’ first mix and, within a few months, went on to develop a complete line of vegetarian mixes with organic and vegan flavors, including blueberry bonanza blast, criminal chocolate chip, witty whole wheat organic, bountiful buckwheat buttermilk and vivacious vanilla.
And from 12:50 to 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Daddy Cakes will be at Bloomingdale’s South Coast Plaza doing a cooking demonstration. You’ll learn how to make great dishes from Daddy Cakes mixes (which take about 5 to 10 minutes to prepare), including sinful cinnamon apple cobbler, pigs in a blanket, brownies, cupcakes, and perfect pancakes.
Daddy Cakes is now available online and at Orange County’s finest markets, including Mother’s Markets, Farm to Market in San Juan Capistrano, Hershey’s Market on Balboa Island, Promelis Market in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, Pacific Ranch Market in Orange and Irvine Ranch Market in Newport Beach.
For more information, call (800) 315-1928 or (949) 309-2669 or visit www.daddycakesbakery.com.
Canned goodness
At the Cannery the local history, hip decor and fine dining make it the perfect choice for any mood. There’s an Asian dining room, with an array of Japanese specialties from the sushi bar; the upstairs Jellyfish Bar (one of Newport’s hottest night spots); and the waterfront Grill Room, that serves incredible steaks, fresh seafood, chops and salads.
And the Cannery offers a happy hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appetizers cost $5 and it’s $2 off all cocktails and beer.
And here’s a hot tip for wine lovers: The Cannery offers a 50/50 wine deal — offering 50 wines for 50% off from its award-winning list. The wine deal is available 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day Tuesday.
Enjoy an upcoming four-course wine dinner at 7 p.m. Tuesday with delicious plates that include Scottish smoked salmon, potato pancake, Sevruga caviar; pear ravioli; a pan-roasted Omaha rib-eye steak, veal jus, Maine lobster sous vide, corn lobster coulis; a camembert Le Chatelain frisse salad; and seasonal fruit tart.
The dinner costs $75 per person. The meal features wines from the Trefethen Family Vineyards. The Cannery is at 3010 Lafayette Road, Newport Beach.
