YOUTH SCENE:
H.B. United, a girls’ Under-11 Plus team out of AYSO Region 55, captured its division title at the Long Beach Mayors Cup on Sunday.
The local team outscored its first three opponents, 8-2, to advance to the title game against the Los Alamitos Lightning.
In the final, Hannah Daye scored a breakaway goal in the second half to lift United to a 1-0 victory and its second shutout win in the tournament.
United forward Wesley Greer was the tournament’s “golden boot winner” for scoring four goals in the tournament, which drew more than 100 teams from Southern California.
In 17 games, United only surrendered seven goals in running up a final overall record of 10-1-6.
The season also included a second-place finish at the Area K Plus tournament in December and winning the Tom Turkey Thanksgiving tournament in Anaheim in November, a title run in which United didn’t allow a single goal.
Leading the way defensively at the Long Beach Mayors Cup was Daye, Katie O’Donnell, Madison Muirhead, Isabella Paz and Nicole Boudreau. Other key contributions came from Melissa Paniz, Hannah Messina, Jocelyn Ciralli, Taylor Beaulac, Julia Donegan, Ciara Brennan and Shannon Scully.
